The Hungry Caterpillar party ideas
The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a story that has captivated young audiences for decades, so why not celebrate your little one’s next birthday with this beloved caterpillar.
One of the reasons The Very Hungry Caterpillar makes for a birthday party is that the story provides a starting point for a cute menu.
Keep in mind that chocolate cake is one of the foods the caterpillar eats in the story. Some great cake ideas can be found on Pinterest.
Cupcakes are also mentioned in The Very Hungry Caterpillar, so this can be a good alternative for your party. If you decide to serve cupcakes, arrange them to look like a green caterpillar cupcake cake.
Small sandwiches made with salami and Swiss cheese will keep guests from being overloaded with sugar. Serve pickles on the side. A sweet idea is to cut the sandwiches out in circles and arrange as the Hungry Caterpillars body with a tomato as the head, just stick on some food as eyes.
For a hungry little caterpillar party, it’s also a great idea to consider having a fruit tray with all of the goodies the caterpillar eats as part of the story.
Surround apples, pears, strawberries, plums, oranges, and watermelon with a bed of fresh green leaves. For a simple fun and healthy party food, add grapes to wooden skewers and decorate with icing for eyes. You may even want to use red grapes for the head.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar Birthday Party Activity Ideas
You can’t go past, an Eric Carle birthday party without including a reading of The Very Hungry Little Caterpillar. There is also a cute DVD version of the story that would be fun to watch at your celebration.
If you’d like to include a craft project as part of your first birthday party, consider having your young guests create thumbprint caterpillars by making a row of alternating light and dark green thumbprints followed by a red thumbprint for the caterpillar’s head. Have an adult draw a face and legs with a fine tipped black marker.
Paper chain caterpillars made from green and red construction paper would also be a cute project for a first birthday party, especially if your guests include children who are slightly older than your baby. In addition, there is an Eric Carle “Match and Munch” game that would be appropriate for the older children who are attending your baby’s hungry little caterpillar party.
Party Favor Ideas
If you decide to hand out party favors, it’s best to keep things fairly simple. Lollipops would be a good choice, since these are specifically mentioned in the story. Crayons and a caterpillar coloring sheet would also be great.
Hang Lanterns down as the Hungry Caterpillars body in green, with a red head. Use lots of bright colors, lots of fruit provide great decoration for the day.
